Aghadoe

Aghadoe is famed for its natural beauty, historical attractions, and views. Home to some of the best views of Killarney National Park and the Lakes of Killarney, a trip out to Aghadoe is a trip well spent.

Situated about 10 minutes from Killarney just off of the Tralee road, there is plenty of parking near the hotel that can be found up there. Across from the hotel is a viewing point that overlooks all of Killarney and rivals Ladies View for beauty. Nearby are the ruins of Parkavonear Castle and an old round tower. The castle was built in the 13th century by a Norman conqueror after the Anglo-Norman invasion, the ruins of the castle have become known over time as “The Bishops Chair” due to their close proximity to Aghadoe Church.

The ruins of the church overlook the Lakes and date back to between the 7th and 12th centuries and would have been the home of the Bishop of Aghadoe back then. The surrounding area of the church was used as a burial ground for victims of the Great Famine and the ruins stand as a reminder of the history of Ireland.

Overall Aghadoe is bursting at the seams with history and overflowing with natural beauty and outrageous views. It is well worth making the short trip out to see Killarney from a new perspective. It is equally as beautiful at night as the lights of the town sparkle in the distance.
