Ross Castle
Ross Castle sits on the edge of Killarney’s lower lake and was built by O’Donoghue Mór in the 15th century. The Castle came into the hands of the Brownes who became the Earls of Kenmare and owned an extensive portion of the lands that are now part of Killarney National Park . Legend has it that O’Donoghue still exists in a deep slumber under the waters of Lough Leane. On the first morning of May every seven years he rises from the lake on his magnificent white horse and circles the lake. Anyone catching a glimpse of him is said to be assured of good fortune for the rest of their lives. The large rock at the entrance to the bay is known as O’Donoghue’s prison. Ross Castle was the last stronghold in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. It was eventually taken by General Ludlow in 1652.

This feels soooo good! This is one of my favourite techniques from the world of structural integration (of which I have many). The eccentric contraction of the muscles along the side of the spine combined with the slow, deep pressure helps to not only free up restrictions but can also give you sensory feedback to move into parts of your spine that don`t move so freely. We all have parts of the spine that we have blind spots to, for many athletes it`s the lumbar spine (low back) to which they struggle with going into flexion because many are stuck in extension, this helps to free up the soft tissue around the low back so that the spine is able to explore those ranges of motion more easily. This technique is not only good for athletes though everyone can benefit from a spine that is able to move more freely.

By car, Ross Castle can be reached via a signposted right turn off the N71 travelling south from Killarney town or by walking or cycling from the Killarney House and Knockreer sections of the National Park. Jaunting cars also make the journey and are available at the jaunting car stand in the town.

Beautiful Ross Castle in the evening after some afternoon rain✨
Ross Castle is a 15th-century tower house and keep on the edge of Lough Leane, in Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland.
It is the ancestral home of the Chiefs of the Clan O’Donoghue,later associated with the Brownes of Killarney.
Ross Castle was built in the late 15th century by local ruling clan the O’Donoghues Mór (Ross), though ownership changed hands during the Second Desmond Rebellion of the 1580s to the MacCarthy Mór.
There is a legend that O’Donoghue leapt or was sucked out of the window of the grand chamber at the top of the castle and disappeared into the waters of the lake along with his horse, his table and his library. It is said that O’Donoghue now lives in a great palace at the bottom of the lake where he keeps a close eye on everything that he sees.

Working back in Killarney National Park is like hanging out with an old friend, except now they`ve got new stories to tell.
I`m really enjoying having another look at locations that I didn`t quite get to work in for my first book , for this next one.. KINGDOM ..( definitely coming this autumn ! )
It was apparently very easy to overlook some amazing locations and to rule out others for being difficult to get to. Now I have the time and a bit more confidence to take them on and see them in them in the first place .

Friday facts; The Gap of Dunloe dates back two million years, when slow-moving ice carved a narrow mountain pass between MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to the west and Purple Mountain to the east. The name Dunloe comes from the Gaelic Dún Loich, meaning the fort or stronghold of Loich, the first leader of an ancient tribe called the Fir Bolg (“men of bags”), who ruled Ireland before the Tuatha de Danaan and the Milesians.
It’s such a magnificent site. Everyone should go here at least once ☘️

"Not all who wander are lost." Exploring the stunning Killarney National Park and hiked the long way to Torc Waterfall. We went hiking up huge hills only to later discover that there was a parking lot right near the waterfall. 🙈 Oh well, exercise is good!
